In fact, according to Google, 53% of mobile website visits are abandoned if a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Traditionally, the retail business model struggles to be flexible - tending to react rather than innovate and drop prices rather than build in-depth customer relationships. So, whether your customer experience isn’t seamless enough, you’re struggling to engage with your audience and keep up with their ever-evolving needs, or your website is a second too slow – retaining business in an era of digital disruption is no easy feat. With a vast array of requirements, they each have different software, products, internal resources, capabilities and long-term goals. Which is why it would be unthinkable for any one customer to be treated the same as the last. Rather than the solution, the conversation should always come first. What’s best for the customer needs to be thoroughly understood from the outset by assessing their needs, challenges and resources. Instead of a blanket approach, the conversation should be top-level and strategic with longer-term planning and the bigger picture in mind. What is a Vendor-Agnostic Approach? With their minds on other things, customers often can’t see the wood for the trees – so they need a vendor who can. By taking a step back and approaching the situation from a neutral stance, a vendor-agnostic supplier can assess the full marketplace and tailor the solution to the company’s needs, rather than leading blindly with a fixed, target-driven product. Many businesses may have a specific solution already in mind when they look for a vendor, which could result in settling for one who will just say “yes”. Rather than opting for what may seem like a painless, short-term solution, companies must partner with a strategic, vendor-agnostic supplier who will have no objection to explaining long-term implications and providing a fully-integrated road-map. Even if that goes against the customer’s initial expectations. After all, a vendor-agnostic consultant will always have the customer’s best interests at heart. Is your Vendor Customer-Centric? Some companies lead with a point product, or suite of applications to secure a sale or align with vendor influenced targets. Instead, a vendor-agnostic approach is proven to help limit risk exposure for many customers, by ensuring technology is aligned with strategic direction and long-term goals. Furthermore, this risk-averse approach extends to maximising value from clients’ existing assets and considering past investments in technology. Most – if not all – companies in the digital age refer to themselves as customer-centric. In an era where the consumer has access to more information than ever, it would be foolish to undermine or underestimate their ability to make their own decisions or “shop around”. But to consider themselves truly customer-centric, vendors must operate with a completely open mind. And be selflessly agnostic. Even if that means turning away business opportunities. Customers should be spoken with on an impartial basis, advising on different solutions and having open conversations - which may also include discussing or suggesting vendors that they may not be currently partnered with. This may create the potential for new partnerships, or result in the vendor walking away if they don’t feel that they can provide the best solution. Many organisations are looking for hybrid Unified Communications solutions, particularly utilising Cisco and Microsoft. Cloud and Microsoft UC Hybrid Solutions The only way that vendors can approach these situations and have these open conversations is with an extensive depth and breadth of knowledge of the marketplace. And from a genuinely objective position. Customers may not have the awareness of hybrid cloud solutions or the expertise in-house, so it is the vendor’s responsibility to provide a neutral, comprehensive and professional viewpoint. While some customers may be ready for a complete overhaul of their current systems, others may have incumbent processes where it’s in their best interest to integrate solutions with existing software. As a result, vendors may work on a purely strategic level for their customers – giving advice and guidance as a vendor-agnostic advisor or as a design consultant to oversee the implementation of new software and products. Or, vendors can work together as part of a hybrid solution with several other specialists and vendors. Vendor partnerships can take many forms, such as working alongside in-house, third-party or sub-contract technicians. Whatever the form it takes, a vendor-agnostic supplier will always work in whichever way results in a long-term tech investment for their customer. This would include reviewing work to date and advising on recommendations for the best solution for the council whilst identifying and documenting any mitigating actions that would need to be resolved to achieve a successful outcome. It was essential for the Council that this consultant had considerable experience specialising as a multi-vendor offering hybrid solutions - in particular, expertise around Cisco Unified Communications and Microsoft Skype for Business, including Office 365. The ability to remain impartial, offering advice and recommendations relating to market-leading vendor products would prove invaluable to achieving the right integrated hybrid solution. We want to be viewed as strategists and consultants that can offer impartial advice when it comes to market and product analysis, and where required deliver multi-vendor solutions (i.e, Cisco and Microsoft UC hybrid). Industry experience In my 30+ year IT career, I’ve worked in the UK and Australia for software and integration companies ranging from small business to global powerhouses. Background I started life in the mainframe software world in my hometown of Newcastle. Drawn to the lights of London, I became one of the go-to design consultants of some of the earliest mass-scale LAN deployments, at a time when speed was a kilobit thing. My curiosity for software took me to collaboration and workflow systems (Lotus Notes in those days) where my team and I broke new ground in automation of things such as global insurance claims. A move to Australia for seven years saw me working more on the development of services portfolios across the globe. This year, they\'ve teamed up with one of the city’s oldest charities, Children North East, for the annual (and highly competitive) Concept Cup. The charity has been working with children and young people in their families, schools and communities for 127 years with a mission that all North East children and young people grow up healthy and happy. Today, Children North East is comprised of 60 staff and more than 200 volunteers, who help thousands of children and young people through all stages of their lives. On Friday 14th September 2018, the five-a-side Concept Cup tournament returned to Goals in Newcastle’s Gosforth Park. Last year saw a record number of 20 teams lace up their boots for the tournament and this year, the Forfusion team returned to leave their hearts (and pride) on the pitch! Two-time champions Utilitywise made it to this year’s semi-finals and the resounding winner was Cook & Turnbull, who beat last year’s champions Northumbrian Water 7-4 in the final of the cup. Forfusion finished 3rd in the group and left gracefully (i.e. got knocked out) in the semi-final of the plate. Lisa Derrick, who worked hard to organise and make this year’s event a huge success, said: “It’s got bigger and bigger and although teams are desperate to win, they know the real reason why we’re doing it”. And although we’d have loved to have made it to the final, we were thrilled to be part of such a fantastic local cause. Forfusion were the proud sponsors of this year’s Player of the Tournament, who was Jack Moulden from Cook & Turnbull – and a worthy winner he was, too! Well done to all of our guys for their efforts, who all thankfully returned with no serious injuries, only a few blisters and a bit of broken pride. The total raised for Children North East was a fantastic £2,800. To all local businesses, we\'ll be ready and waiting on the pitch next year. This requires ensuring an efficient end to end process in order to achieve consistent, profitable delivery of services, whilst maintaining an empowered and happy team. Industry experience I ventured into the technology sector 11 years ago, quickly obtaining an understanding of and strong relationships within the Cisco supply chain via UK distribution partners. During the early years of Forfusion, this allowed for key relationships to be formed alongside the building of a stable, process driven foundation for growth. More recently, I have been responsible for the overall scoping, implementation and adoption of a single vendor eco-system, automating processes and increasing efficiencies across CRM, finance / back-office, PMO and Contracts. Although we are currently in early adoption phase, this will transform the scalability and intelligence of the Forfusion operation over the coming months and years. Background Following further education studying Design and Engineering, I applied this knowledge to the Telecoms Industry. I progressed through various companies in roles from design office to PMO and ultimately Programme Manager for a national rollout of cross-carrier mast installations and upgrades. I worked closely with TIER2 management teams, where I gained knowledge of well-executed processes, the understanding of commercial implication, customer relations and the importance of a strong, well-engaged team. I left Telecoms to start an online company that provided a trading platform/portal that allowed for smaller suppliers to join forces in order to jointly fulfil larger order requests. This provided education on the provisioning and running of a limited company, the world of Cisco Networking, and the importance of cash flow and ledgering. Favourite quote “Be a yardstick of quality. The amount of time and collaborative effort required to achieve simplicity is often undervalued; but if you are going to invest your energy into any project, you should always aim for the output to be something that others aspire to. Other interests Outside of work, I enjoy most forms of sport and am motivated by competition and challenge days. I also love troubleshooting and fixing anything mechanical, albeit that I don’t get much time nowadays to indulge. My ongoing (9 years!) project is a C20XE engined 1972 Mini 1275GT, that is currently looking very sad in the garage! My role encompasses vendor and product alignment, engineering capability and strategic partner selection. Industry experience Since leaving the RAF in 2005, I’ve worked for some of the largest SI’s and technology vendors in the world. This afforded me a fascinating insight into how IT worked or rather didn’t work, in some of the UK’s largest commercial and public sector organisations. I specialised initially in network and security infrastructure, gaining a solid understanding of the importance of the network as an enabling platform for delivering world-class applications and collaboration services. As the world moves towards the third Platform of IT; where mobility, cloud, big data and social platforms are going to play a huge part in shaping all of our futures, I try to ensure Forfusion’s strategic partners are aligned on the same journey and have solutions to match our customers\' expectations. Background I developed a passion for technology during a 14-year career as an Electronics Engineer in the RAF, working on everything from valve driven amplifiers (yes valves!) to the latest solid state, microprocessor powered radar systems. The RAF allowed me to experience first-hand how powerful today’s modern integrated systems can be; at the heart of it all, digital computers providing critical real-time information to save lives and keep the nation secure. Favourite quote “Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? He’s a mile away and you’ve got his shoes.” Billy Connolly One of my all-time heroes and so much more than a comedian. Now sadly suffering from Parkinson’s disease I saw him live last year, and it was inspirational to see someone so clearly robbed of their on-stage physical exuberance, still able to elicit side-splitting laughter through his warmth, intelligence and wit. Other interests As a father of three, my leisure time is at somewhat of a premium. So, when not performing the role of chauffeur, butler, UN peacekeeper or cat herder, I like to try and keep fit either down the local gym or by playing football. I also enjoy the odd round of golf – only when the weather is good, mind. Finally, I find reading is a great way of relaxing, so I try and end the day with a few pages of John le Carre or Tom Clancy. That’s why we’re firm believers in apprenticeship schemes, as well as fast-track training programmes to help develop and nurture our talent. We know that if you’re not advancing, then neither are we. We’ve chatted with Connor, our engineering apprentice to get a first-hand insight into life at Forfusion as an apprentice. Why did you decide you would like to do an engineering apprenticeship at Forfusion? I decided that I wanted to do an apprenticeship when I was still in sixth form. While I was studying there, I realised that I preferred a hands-on approach, so an apprenticeship was an obvious choice for me. I knew that I wanted to work for Forfusion during my initial interview with them; they put emphasis on how important past apprentices have been for the company, which made me feel like I could make a real difference. The experience has been brilliant so far, the team allow me to manage my own time, which is great as I know what I need to prioritise. How did you find out about the vacancy and apply? I found the vacancy through Baltic Training. The process was straightforward. Firstly, I had a telephone interview with Baltic and after this, I received weekly or fortnightly calls about apprenticeships they currently had available and some information about the companies offering the apprenticeships. It was during one of these calls that Baltic mentioned Forfusion and I knew I wanted an interview. Fortunately, Baltic arranged the interview to work around my schedule. At the time I was working part-time at McDonald\'s as well as coming to the end of sixth form, so there was a lot of coursework and revision for exams to be done. Baltic had multiple calls with me in the run-up to the interview, which helped me prepare and gave me the best chance of getting the apprenticeship. What does your job involve? My role involves working on the Support Desk, where we have our own specialisations and mine is the Microsoft UC (Unified Communications). This involves applications such as Skype for Business and PeterConnects. Skype for Business is an enterprise communications platform used by multiple customers. Skype can be used to IM (Instant Message), audio and video conference and connect using Meeting/Conference Phones (Polycom phones) and Surface Hubs. PeterConnects is the application we use for receptions for various customers. The application can be used for answering calls, placing calls on hold, transferring, conferencing in other callers and setting up conference calls. It also allows us to create IVRs (Interactive Voice Response), call queues and more. My primary role would be first line support for the applications mentioned above. My secondary role would be classed as internal support, where I have taken on the responsibilities of setting up new starters\' laptops, fixing or sending laptops back that are still under warranty and day-to-day internal support as well. How have you found the work so far? When I started back in September I initially found some of the work quite challenging, but with the help and support of my colleagues I quickly settled in and the overall experience has been very rewarding. It’s great being part of the team as I get given responsibilities that not only keep my days busy with work I enjoy doing but also enables me to have time to complete my coursework and revise for exams. What do you enjoy the most about your role? The most enjoyable and satisfying part about my apprenticeship is when I configure and solve something without referring to any documentation. This has continued over the duration of the apprenticeship as the issues and requests have become more complex. Another thing I enjoy about the apprenticeship is the work environment as there is always someone willing to help if I do get stuck. What do you find most challenging about your role? The most challenging part is balancing coursework, exams, online webinars and day-to-day work requirements. This has become easier because of the help I’ve been getting from my line manager, colleagues on the service desk and improvements in my own time management. Thankfully for the first month, I had another apprentice showing me what he does and what I’d be taking over, so I had a thorough hand-over. What’s it like working at Forfusion? Working at Forfusion is great because it gives me the opportunity to work with highly-skilled engineers that allow me to ask a multitude of questions. Even the senior staff make time for me if I have any questions or highly technical faults. This lets me accelerate my knowledge and helps develop my current skillset which is a bonus as I want to be a fully qualified engineer as soon as possible. Another benefit is that Forfusion strongly believes in a great working culture and constantly does what it can to improve employee satisfaction. For example, they pay for your gym membership, eye appointments, provide free drinks and healthy snacks in the office and other perks. What do you hope to do after your apprenticeship? I hope to continue to a level 4 apprenticeship with Forfusion as I’m currently enjoying the mix of online courses, exams and work placement where I can talk directly to the customer and work through problems and faults with them. After my level 4 apprenticeship, I hope to get a job here as a first or second line support engineer. What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship instead of full-time college or university? I would highly recommend an apprenticeship if you are wanting hands-on experience where you can study and gain certifications and qualifications at the same time. It’s also a huge bonus to be earning a salary rather than incurring student debt. Unlike university, if you do change your mind on the industry or path you want to go down, you can always change path once your apprenticeship is over.
