Spanning three days, the event covers current trends, key upcoming topics and the future of work to help clients succeed.  Forfusion was represented at the summit by Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Ian Musgrave, and we chat to him below about Forfusion&rsquo;s working partnership with Citrix, the trip and the key themes that emerged during the event.  Hello Ian, you recently arrived back in the UK after the Citrix Summit, where did you stay and how long were you there?  The summit took place in Orlando, Florida this year, so slightly more pleasant than the January weather back in the UK!  I went out there on the 12th January and stayed for 4 days in Lake Buena Vista, which is located close to Disney World, arriving back last Thursday (16th).  Could you expand a little on the Summit itself?  It was busy! Over 5000 people, made up of Citrix members and partners from across the globe, were in attendance. It was great to network and gain insight from such a wide range of sectors and backgrounds.  The Summit itself covered a range of objectives, allowing Citrix a platform to review the previous year and its current marketplace standing, as well as giving the Senior Leadership team the opportunity to set out strategic objectives for the upcoming year.  For a company like Forfusion, the main objective is to gain a firmer understanding of exactly where Citrix want their partners to focus. There were many opportunities to learn about these objectives through breakout sessions; learning about the latest technologies, solutions and sales &amp; marketing initiatives.  Alongside the Keynote speakers and breakout sessions, were there any other sessions that particularly stood out?  I found the breakouts interesting but in addition to those, the World of Solutions was great. Here, you got the chance to get hands on with the solutions and those of some of Citrix&rsquo;s main partners, like Microsoft and Cisco. A very valuable session indeed.  What seems to be the most prevalent topic that&rsquo;s emerged from the Summit?  To be honest, it&rsquo;s difficult to pinpoint one specific area, but I think there were three main takeaways for Forfusion and our clients base.  Firstly, there is a clear shift by Citrix to move away from focusing on how good the technology is. Instead, the focus is to help businesses ensure their Employee Experience is effective and sustainable. Not only to attract the best talent, but retain them long term and drive productivity and working practices that suit everybody in the business.  Secondly, the evolution of Cloud continues at a rapid pace and Citrix are at the forefront of this. Not only with their own Cloud SaaS applications and solutions, but their new focus on Microapps, which allow SaaS applications to be embedded into the Workspace application.  Last but certainly not least, the fact that Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) is not the death knell of Citrix virtualisation. Microsoft presenters and engineers were on hand to demo how the two organisations are partnering and how Citrix are ideally placed to help customers make the most of any WVD deployments they may be considering.    &nbsp;  In what ways will these new developments benefit our client base, the end-user?  For our clients, the main benefit is engaging their workforce in the right way. Studies have shown that around a third of an organisation&rsquo;s workforce is disengaged with poor technology, systems and processes a primary factor.  The good news is that the intelligent workspaces and applications displayed at the Citrix Summit means that we can help our clients turn these figures around and increase workforce engagement and productivity.  With that in mind, could you delve a little deeper into the working partnership between Forfusion and Citrix?  It has benefits right across the board, not only by strengthening our portfolio of Cloud solutions, but they also complement our long-standing partnership with Microsoft, allowing us to add significantly more client value through Azure and Office365.  The partnership particularly works because it enhances our capability to deliver end-to-end solutions for our clients and our existing solution portfolio and skillsets. For example, our deep understanding of Data Centre has allowed us to deliver advanced, hybrid virtualised desktop solutions with on-premises elements powered by the latest HCI solutions.  Lastly, did you get a chance to relax and see many sites?  Well, the schedule was busy as I&rsquo;ve said, but we certainly managed to enjoy ourselves during the downtime. Citrix pulled out all the stops.  There were Partner/Distributor networking events over dinner and the odd beer (or few!) during the evenings. Tuesday night was the Partner Appreciation Event, for which Citrix hired Universal Studios for our exclusive access. That was pretty cool. All in all, a very interesting, topical trip that will no doubt benefit Forfusion and our clients into 2020 and beyond. I&rsquo;ve architected complex designs, technology road-maps and risk mitigation strategies, for some of the largest blue-chip companies in the world. More recently, I&rsquo;ve been responsible for managing and executing a company acquisition, as well as developing the associated earn out mechanics.  Background  Prior to life in the commercial world, I spent my time working for the armed forces in some of the most hostile places on earth. Whilst serving, I worked extensively with computer networks, as well as designing blast walls to absorb rocket energy. I also worked as a specialised military diver and spent half my life underwater searching for dead bodies and other unpleasant things. To let off steam I spent much of my time on the judo mat and in the boxing ring, and in fact, participating in any physical and mental challenge that presented itself. Below, he discusses the Forfusion culture, projects he&rsquo;s worked on and places he&rsquo;s visited as part of the company.  Where it all started&hellip;  Way back when I was 16, working in Telecoms for British Rail. It&rsquo;s been quite the journey since!  I&rsquo;ve worked in both the public and private sectors, working remotely and office-based. Both have their upsides, but I&rsquo;ve always enjoyed the mixed roles with a bit of travelling thrown in. I spent a fair bit of time in Germany and the Middle East during my career.  Such is life, just as I decided to come back and settle in the UK, a recession hit. The temporary position I took up with the local Council turned into 21 years&rsquo; service!  How I got here&hellip;  In a nutshell, life&rsquo;s too short. I was growing a little disillusioned in my previous job and thought if I was ever going to make the move, then it would have to be now.  My initial feeling was that I didn&rsquo;t have a cat in hell\'s chance of getting the job, thinking my lack of experience with next gen technology would go against me. But with Forfusion, it&rsquo;s not always about what&rsquo;s down on a piece of paper, but as much to do with an individual&rsquo;s personality and their potential culture fit.  I really got a feel for the culture at Forfusion during my second interview and really wanted the job. I was delighted to get a call a few days later to say it was mine.  It&rsquo;s been a busy six months&hellip;.  I was in the office about two weeks before being sent out to one of Forfusion&rsquo;s healthcare clients, rolling out the new Cisco Hyperflex kit. My previous Network roles meant that I had a working knowledge of Cisco products, but I had to quickly adapt to some of the newer stuff.  Since then, it&rsquo;s mostly been about migration projects and improving the network security for clients across the retail, healthcare, and public sectors. Pretty full on, but I really wouldn&rsquo;t have it any other way as it&rsquo;s great to get out, do different things and see different places!  My passport&rsquo;s been busy too&hellip;  Since joining Forfusion, I&rsquo;ve worked on client sites in Wertheim (Germany), La Roca (Spain), La Vall&eacute;e (France) and Kildare, with projects coming up in Fidanza (Italy) and Belgium.  I don&rsquo;t know if my wife will be too happy with me saying this but, as a passionate advocate of exploring and visiting new places, I really do love the travelling aspect of my job and hope to do more as Forfusion continues to grow.  &nbsp;  County Kildare, Ireland.  The greatest place I&rsquo;ve ever been&hellip;  From a personal perspective, it would have to be Vienna. My wife and I went there as part of our 25th Wedding Anniversary celebrations to visit the opera house for a show. Truly one of the most spectacular places I&rsquo;ve ever visited.  The trips to Spain have been my favourites as part of Forfusion. Not only have the places been wonderful, but the clients on site have been so accommodating and it&rsquo;s been great to provide support on such a personal level, witnessing first-hand the positive impact we can have.  A typical day in the office&hellip;.  On the occasions I&rsquo;m in the office, I offer 3rd line support for the support desk and additional project support. The project side of things will probably increase going forward, but with so much going on I&rsquo;m usually busy with the hands-on stuff!  What&rsquo;s hot&hellip;.  The travelling aspect is great, but the main thing I&rsquo;ve loved about joining Forfusion is the ethos and culture. There&rsquo;s a real togetherness here; you always feel supported and listened to, regardless of department or seniority.  It&rsquo;s like nothing I&rsquo;ve ever really experienced before in my career.  What&rsquo;s not&hellip;  I can leave this blank so far!  It&rsquo;s great to be challenged, or learn something new, every day&hellip;  The most challenging aspect has probably been working with the Cisco Next Gen stuff, but it&rsquo;s amazing how much you pick up when learning on the job. There are plenty of key Cisco elements I&rsquo;d like to still know, so there are plans in place for me to develop these skills on upcoming training courses.  &nbsp;  David on a Forfusion client\'s site in La Roca, Spain.  If I had a crystal ball&hellip;  My hopes for the future are to simply keep doing what I&rsquo;m doing. As I&rsquo;ve mentioned previously, I love how hands-on my job is, working closely with clients and getting that face-to-face interaction. Chief Technology Officer                           Email &nbsp;&nbsp; Call +44 (0) 191 500 9100                                                                                                                                                          Profile Bio               Areas of responsibility within Forfusion  As Chief Technical Officer I&rsquo;m responsible for defining our technical strategy and culture. My role encompasses vendor and product alignment, engineering capability and strategic partner selection.  Industry experience  Since leaving the RAF in 2005, I&rsquo;ve worked for some of the largest SI&rsquo;s and technology vendors in the world. This afforded me a fascinating insight into how IT worked or rather didn&rsquo;t work, in some of the UK&rsquo;s largest commercial and public sector organisations. I specialised initially in network and security infrastructure, gaining a solid understanding of the importance of the network as an enabling platform for delivering world-class applications and collaboration services.  As the world moves towards the third&nbsp;Platform of IT; where mobility, cloud, big data and social platforms are going to play a huge part in shaping all of our futures, I try to ensure Forfusion&rsquo;s strategic partners are aligned on the same journey and have solutions to match our customers\' expectations.  Background  I developed a passion for technology during a 14-year career as an Electronics Engineer in the RAF, working on everything from valve driven amplifiers (yes valves!)  to the latest solid state, microprocessor powered radar systems. The RAF allowed me to experience first-hand how powerful today&rsquo;s modern integrated systems can be; at the heart of it all, digital computers providing critical real-time information to save lives and keep the nation secure.  Favourite quote    &ldquo;Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? He&rsquo;s a mile away and you&rsquo;ve got his shoes.&rdquo;  Billy Connolly  One of my all-time heroes and so much more than a comedian. Now sadly suffering from Parkinson&rsquo;s disease I saw him live last year, and it was inspirational to see someone so clearly robbed of their on-stage physical exuberance, still able to elicit side-splitting laughter through his warmth, intelligence and wit.  Other interests  As a father of three, my leisure time is at somewhat of a premium. So, when not performing the role of chauffeur, butler, UN peacekeeper or cat herder, I like to try and keep fit either down the local gym or by playing football. I also enjoy the odd round of golf &ndash; only when the weather is good, mind. Finally, I find reading is a great way of relaxing, so I try and end the day with a few pages of John le Carre or Tom Clancy. Full Name*Email Address*Company*Job Title*I would like to recieve the latest news and insights from Forfusion.Book now                                                                                                                                                                             One of the &lsquo;Holy Grails&rsquo; of on-premise (or private cloud) and public cloud delivery is allowing these disparate entities to function in the same management and networking domains. The process, which can be carried out manually, is labyrinthine in its complexity, with lots of individual components and policies that cannot be managed centrally, making deployment and continued support a daunting prospect.  
ACI (Application Centric Infrastructure) Anywhere is a logical multi-cloud SDN extension for ACI MSO (Multi-Site Orchestrator). MSO is a software component used for the deployment of Multi-Site ACI. The MSO is responsible for ensuring the ACI fabrics in each DC have the same polices and objects created. Think of MSO as the glue that takes two entirely independent fabrics (each with its own failure domain) and ensures they function as a single entity (on-premise to cloud and cloud to cloud), including seamless region to region inside the same cloud provider.  
With ACI anywhere the same MSO can perform this function for various cloud IaaS providers, ensuring that functions such as security enforcement policies and workload analytics are visible and adhered to automatically, the underlying network functions as a secure cloud interconnect, managed as a single entity.  
MSO uses APIs to communicate with the ACI fabric APIC&rsquo;s (Application Policy Infrastructure Controller) and the fabrics various cloud providers, meaning MSO provides a single pane of glass to manage not only the private cloud (ACI) but the public cloud as well.  
ACI anywhere can quickly deploy a cloud fabric, including the networking and security components that are indistinguishable from the private cloud, this process removes one of the blockers for organisations to fully leverage a true seamless hybrid cloud - the operational, configurational and management complexity. With ACI anywhere seamless fabrics can be automated and stood up on demand, using a single intuitive GUI.  
APIC has a cloud hosted version, imaginatively titled - Cloud APIC, available from the marketplace on each of the cloud providers. The Cloud APIC is usually deployed automatically by the MSO and configured using restful northbound API&rsquo;s. At least one Cloud APIC is required for each cloud provider. The Cloud APIC is responsible for performing ACI policy translation into the cloud provider fabric.  
The Cloud APIC does not necessarily need the private cloud element (on premise ACI) to function, it&rsquo;s a perfectly valid use case, to use it to provide seamless multi-cloud using just cloud provider IaaS. That being said a hybrid cloud architecture is recommended to truly realise the power of ACI Anywhere and the inherent cost savings it provides.  
To act as the network layer to underpin this process ACI Anywhere leverages the popular 1000v CSR (a staple of many cloud provisions) to act as the fabric underlay, with support for IPSEC (DMVPN), VxLAN, mBGP EVPN and anycast gateway, the 1000v CSR provides seamless IP mobility options for virtualised environments. The CSR 1000v&rsquo;s are usually deployed automatically by the MSO and configured using Netconf.  
For the purposes of seamlessly stitching the private / public cloud together the following technologies are used as overlays, all configured by the Cloud APIC, thus abstracting the complexity involved:    VxLAN data plane is used to connect the ACI fabric to the cloud provider, this is transported over an overlay technology such as IPSEC, DMVPN, SDWAN, which forms an underlay for Multi-cloud itself.  mBGP EVPN is used for routing reachability between the ACI fabric and the cloud provider.  Other Sites are connected with any overlay technology IPSEC, DMVPN, SDWAN.    
The flexibility provided in the networking stack ensures that true cloud based VM mobility is possible, whereby VMs can be hosted and addressed in the same way whether they are physically (from a hypervisor point of view) in the private cloud or the public cloud. I&rsquo;d strongly recommend that SD-WAN be used as an underlay for all multi-cloud connections. With SD-WAN, ACI Anywhere can leverage many additional benefits such as policy based best path selection and seamless fabric integration with the major cloud providers. This includes SaaS providers (including O365, Salesforce, ServiceNow etc.) and IaaS providers.

The awards are a key part of Tech Data&rsquo;s ACES Momentum programme, which was specially designed to support key Cisco partners in their growth and business transformation ambitions. The programme provides a whole host of business benefits including training, specialist advice and accreditations.  The pinnacle of the programme is the annual awards. Background  I started life in the mainframe software world in my hometown of Newcastle. Drawn to the lights of London, I became one of the go-to design consultants of some of the earliest mass-scale LAN deployments, at a time when speed was a kilobit thing.  My curiosity for software took me to collaboration and workflow systems (Lotus Notes in those days) where my team and I broke new ground in automation of things such as global insurance claims. A move to Australia for seven years saw me working more on the development of services portfolios across the globe. Returning to my native North East in 2003, I&rsquo;ve remained in IT businesses in various consulting, service and commercial roles. (If you&rsquo;d like to read this white paper, please register to download here&nbsp;.)This follow on blog is intended to answer a question I get asked a lot &ndash; &ldquo;What&rsquo;s the difference between network-centric ACI and application-centric ACI?&rdquo;.  
As you already know ACI stands for Application Centric Infrastructure, but why is it referred to as either network or application centric from a design and deployment perspective?  
Network-Centric ACI  
In this ACI deployment model, the ACI fabric is deployed to function similarly to a traditional data centre, but with some key advantages. ACI is not a security tool in its own right, but it has features that are a big improvement when compared against legacy DC fabric designs. One standout capability is the level of granularity available in terms of micros-segmentation, when compared to a traditional data centre. Most of the desirable functionality however, is provided by the policy plane in the form of contracts between EPGs.  
As we learned in the white paper its usual to have a 1:1 relationship between BD&rsquo;s and subnets. In this approach where we have multiple subnets and BD&rsquo;s we can make ACI very similar to a traditional network and leverage the advantages that ACI holds over a traditional network. In this approach, we basically take the existing VLANs and VRFs and map them into ACI. We can now control traffic between EPGs (and if required within EPGs) using ACI&rsquo;s policy plane. This method is usually the first point of migration, when first deploying an ACI fabric. 
The disadvantage is that it&rsquo;s a bit more involved to automate, and you must take a lot of legacy logical components with you into the ACI fabric, some of which may not be optimal. The advantage on the other hand is that it is relatively easy for traditional network engineers (who might not have had lots of exposure to ACI) to understand how ACI functions.  
Deploying network-centric ACI is often seen as the first step towards application-centric ACI.  
Application-Centric ACI  
In this ACI deployment model the expectation is that everything is automated, and that it&rsquo;s desirable from an automation perspective to have the underlying ACI infrastructure as simple as possible. How simple? One subnet, one BD, one VRF simple, this way you can spin up new servers and the associated EPGs in a single workflow, without having to worry about automating route leaking between subnets or VRFs as part of the workflow. Using Application-centric ACI it&rsquo;s very easy to map a 3-tiered application into three EPGs, one for front end, one for middleware, and finally one for DB backend. As EPGs use a zero-trust model, the automation workflow can create the contracts to include exclusive communication between the application tiers. Multi-destination flooding is also controlled so that MD traffic is either dropped or flooding in its original encapsulation, rather than flooded (which is the default).  
This deployment model for ACI lends itself to multitenancy and cloud provisions, where the expectation is that the fabric facilitates the application traffic, and that some access to the public internet will be required. The deployment of a high-level orchestration engine such as Cisco Cloud Connect to manage, define and deploy the various automation elements that make up a workflow is expected. And with more and more companies becoming aware of the cloud&rsquo;s countless advantages and innovations, that percentage is rapidly increasing. Cloud computing and hybrid cloud solutions are increasing businesses&rsquo; scalability and mobility, drastically reducing costs and innovating their services. When controlled carefully, it can also be beneficial towards cybersecurity &ndash; safeguarding even the most sensitive and highly-regulated data.
 
But how do you ensure your cloud security is watertight? Along with high-cost savings, cloud computing also brings high risks and threats. Threats such as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) and Man In the Middle attacks, loss of access, data loss, and web server vulnerabilities. And although most cloud providers do offer integrated security tools, it&rsquo;s crucial to put your own procedures in place when storing sensitive data. From educating personnel and regularly conducting audits and risk assessments to encrypting data in-house and implementing multiple layers of security, there are many ways of ensuring absolute security to increase network visibility and control. If you are thinking about migrating your data to the cloud, implementing a hybrid cloud solution &ndash; or if you&rsquo;re planning to adopt a more rigorous security system &ndash; be sure to consider the following processes&hellip;  Perform a Thorough Security Audit  Carefully assessing any potential security threats is an essential part of cloud maintenance. By conducting a careful security audit, you&rsquo;ll be able to identify any gaps between the cloud&rsquo;s security measures and your business&rsquo;s own Network Access Security Policy. There is a range of security features that need to be measured:    Management (centralised management for consistent security policy, vulnerability patching, security application updates and alerting)  Security Intelligence (emerging malware and threats to provide timely detection)  Compliance (internal and external compliance requirement)  Segmentation (segmentation of data, devices and users)  Threat Defence (ability to detect, prevent, eliminate or contain cyber threats)  Secure Services (access control, VPN, secure email, data-loss prevention)    Backup Data Locally  To stay on the safe side, it&rsquo;s a good idea to back-up your data locally, so that it&rsquo;s always accessible even if the original gets lost or corrupted. You can either do this manually, stored in an external storage device, or automatically using an additional cloud service. Before choosing a backup provider, it&rsquo;s important to research each service thoroughly, until you find one that&rsquo;s trustworthy, secure and fitting with your business&rsquo;s requirements.  Be sure to consider features such as encryption, scalability, automatic or scheduled backup, and file versioning. But remember, the features you require will be dependent on the nature of your data &ndash; file versioning (a tool that allows users to return to the previous version of a file) isn&rsquo;t recommended for data where updates are vital, while encryption tools are essential when backing-up sensitive data.  Encrypt Data Before It&rsquo;s Stored in the Cloud  Most major cloud service providers will encrypt your data both at-rest and in-transit. This means your content will be scrambled into an incoherent code &ndash; one that can only be deciphered by those with a decryption key &ndash; both when the data is moving into the cloud and when it&rsquo;s static. Although this encryption is mostly effective, it still doesn&rsquo;t guarantee absolute security, making it an ineffective way of handling sensitive data.  Just as the cloud service is responsible for scrambling your data, it&rsquo;s also responsible for holding the key that unlocks it. To ensure absolute security, it&rsquo;s important that the decryption key is only held by yourself as well as trained and trusted personnel. Encrypting data before it&rsquo;s transferred to the cloud is the most effective way to do this, by using an encryption tool that&rsquo;s external to your cloud provider.  Make Employees Aware of a Security Policy  Enforcing a strict cyber-security policy in place is essential in any business. It should be comprehensive enough to cover all aspects of cloud computing, encompassing everything from passwords and data location storage to incident response procedures. Make sure every member of staff has a full understanding of the policy, not just IT teams. After all, a small slip-up from one member of staff is all it takes for data to be hacked or leaked. Hosting regular cyber-security sessions are a good way to ensure that every employee is thoroughly aware of their security responsibilities. As well as explaining the policy in detail, be sure to highlight the effect that security breaches can have on the company, as this impact is likely to encourage staff to take security seriously.  Choose Exhaustive, Up-To-Date Security Tools  Most cloud service providers offer a range of security add-on tools, which allow users to scale their cloud security to the nature of their data. For example, those dealing with highly-regulated, sensitive data could use tools such as Data Classification and Secrets Management, while all users should consider firewalls and threat detection tools. When subscribing to a cloud service, be sure to research any additional security products that are offered with the service, until you find the tools that are best suited to your business.  Once your cloud is sufficiently safeguarded, it&rsquo;s imperative that these tools are regularly updated. Security software and appliances are constantly being improved to keep ahead of hackers &ndash; holes are regularly repaired, while any bugs are removed and fixed &ndash; so be sure to use the most recent version for absolute security.  Use a Managed Service Provider  Keeping the cloud secure requires constant management, monitoring, maintenance and updates. This can be especially time-consuming if you&rsquo;re in an industry that regularly handles sensitive data, as more security procedures are required. One option could be to assign an in-house team to cloud security management &ndash; however, this can be expensive, and an in-house team offers little flexibility for quiet periods where less data is being handled.  The most secure solution is to outsource your business&rsquo;s cloud management to a trusted managed service provider. This means that a third-party, qualified digital team would be responsible for all essential cloud security tasks, from monitoring through to incident response. Not only will this free-up your team&rsquo;s time to focus on business performance, its scalability means it&rsquo;s an extremely cost-effective solution.

I&rsquo;ve architected complex designs, technology road-maps and risk mitigation strategies, for some of the largest blue-chip companies in the world. More recently, I&rsquo;ve been responsible for managing and executing a company acquisition, as well as developing the associated earn out mechanics.  Background  Prior to life in the commercial world, I spent my time working for the armed forces in some of the most hostile places on earth. Whilst serving, I worked extensively with computer networks, as well as designing blast walls to absorb rocket energy. I also worked as a specialised military diver and spent half my life underwater searching for dead bodies and other unpleasant things. To let off steam I spent much of my time on the judo mat and in the boxing ring, and in fact, participating in any physical and mental challenge that presented itself. Aside from this, I love fine wine and France, as well as spending time with my crazy boxer dogs and my very patient girlfriend.
