I&rsquo;ve architected complex designs, technology road-maps and risk mitigation strategies, for some of the largest blue-chip companies in the world. More recently, I&rsquo;ve been responsible for managing and executing a company acquisition, as well as developing the associated earn out mechanics.  Background  Prior to life in the commercial world, I spent my time working for the armed forces in some of the most hostile places on earth. Whilst serving, I worked extensively with computer networks, as well as designing blast walls to absorb rocket energy. I also worked as a specialised military diver and spent half my life underwater searching for dead bodies and other unpleasant things. To let off steam I spent much of my time on the judo mat and in the boxing ring, and in fact, participating in any physical and mental challenge that presented itself. Whether through an increase in digital disruption and innovation, or driven by the growth in customer facing digital services and applications, there are many factors driving the digital economy.  This demand enables the creation of exciting new businesses, all with a focus on delivering new customer experiences through the innovative use of technology.  Whilst customers and the wider economy benefit, companies themselves need to grapple with the challenges this growth creates. One of the most pressing issues is maintaining a constant stream of highly skilled technicians, consultants and developers to maintain that growth.  As a result, the IT skills gap in the UK continues to widen, and given the events of the past few weeks, uncertainty surrounding the UK\'s position in Europe may discourage companies from turning to talent from further afield.  So what can be done?  Earlier this week Forfusion had another successful Trainee graduate from our Trainee Development Program (TDP), this is the second graduate we\'ve had come through the program in the past couple of months, and we\'re pleased to say they have exceeded our expectations and are a great example of the young talent that\'s out there in our region.  To ensure these individuals have the right environment in which they can fully develop their skills, requires a lot of effort from the wider Forfusion team, and it\'s been well worth it.  By creating a flexible program of work experience, structured learning, mentoring and assessment, we believe we\'ve created a balanced environment in which the trainees can flourish. The program allows trainees to play to their strengths whilst also focusing on areas which require improvement, developing these through on-line learning, and most importantly mentoring.  Assigning each trainee, a Senior Engineer or Consultant as mentor for the duration of the program, is one of the major reasons for its success. We\'ve have been pleasantly surprised by the feedback from both trainees and mentors alike.  From a trainee&rsquo;s perspective not only does it allow the trainees a more informal way of learning, but they also benefit from the many years of experience each mentor possesses. From a mentor&rsquo;s perspective it also aids their development and helps them develop soft skills, and also keep on top of core skills which may be at risk of becoming stale if they were solely focussed on delivering solutions day in, day out.  What next for Forfusion and TDP?   Given its success, the program is here to stay. We\'re currently hosting a number of school leavers on work experience over the summer on the lookout for the best local talent who will be the next TDP entrants. We\'re also looking at how the program can be improved and whether it can be integrated it with the Government sponsored Apprentice scheme, which will hopefully bring additional benefits and expand our reach across the North East talent pool. I&rsquo;ve architected complex designs, technology road-maps and risk mitigation strategies, for some of the largest blue-chip companies in the world. More recently, I&rsquo;ve been responsible for managing and executing a company acquisition, as well as developing the associated earn out mechanics.  Background  Prior to life in the commercial world, I spent my time working for the armed forces in some of the most hostile places on earth. Whilst serving, I worked extensively with computer networks, as well as designing blast walls to absorb rocket energy. I also worked as a specialised military diver and spent half my life underwater searching for dead bodies and other unpleasant things. To let off steam I spent much of my time on the judo mat and in the boxing ring, and in fact, participating in any physical and mental challenge that presented itself. Aside from this, I love fine wine and France, as well as spending time with my crazy boxer dogs and my very patient girlfriend. I also enjoy reading books on business strategy and pursuing further studies to broaden my knowledge in this weird and wonderful world. My name is Davey, I am 22 and I have just graduated with a Dual Honours degree in Chinese Language and International Politics, from Nottingham Trent University.  As my course name suggests, there wasn&rsquo;t much IT involved, so when Forfusion accepted me on a work placement, my knowledge of IT networking was very basic. Nevertheless, I wanted to see what IT business involved and to see whether I could put my skills to good use in this environment being an IT novice.  I was taught a lot more than the basics of just IT networking. It was the COO, David Griffin that helped me develop the concepts behind running a business, from accounting and budgeting for the business as a whole, to customised software.  Forfusion provided me with the right resources to get a better understanding of the basics for setting up a network and an insight into sitting the CCNA exam, my first step on the Cisco career ladder.  These resources came in the form of Cisco textbooks and PC applications, as well as one-on-one time with Forfusion&rsquo;s Cisco experts, which I found invaluable as they were able to explain the fundamentals of networking faster than any book or video could have done.  I have enjoyed my time at Forfusion immensely and I have also found how I can apply my skills within an IT business. IT like all other business requires a good level of communication between its employees and customers, and being able to speak four languages enables me to communicate efficiently and effectively.&nbsp;  I have also seen the similarities between a business and politics &ndash; both use the process of making uniform decisions that apply to members of a group.  Being at Forfusion has made me think about the future and what it may hold for me. Now that the trip is over, and I&rsquo;m back in the UK, I&rsquo;d like to share what I consider to be the main pros and cons of my experience, as well as briefly mention some of the tools and applications that had either helped or hindered productivity.  Picturesque productivity  The first thing I noticed about being removed from the office environment was my ability to think more abstractly. The beautiful and quiet surroundings meant that I was able to focus on some of the more pressing strategic challenges, which have become increasingly important as Forfusion&rsquo;s growth has continued to accelerate.  Everyday communications were a lot easier than I had envisaged. I had been working very much as I do when in the UK office; relying on instant messaging (IM) for quick, ad hoc updates and using video/web conferencing for more involved meetings and/or when content sharing was necessary.  Connection is key  Communicating over video wasn&rsquo;t always perfect; however, I think it&rsquo;s fair to say that issues weren&rsquo;t necessarily related to the applications I had been using, moreover a result of terminating equipment in the UK, poor 3G coverage in France, or dips in internet performance (especially in mountainous areas when using satellite). For the most part, I enjoyed a reliable experience communicating across all media, both with team Forfusion and customers, which was extremely reassuring.  Smarter working = excessive accessibility?  In terms of challenges, I would say that allocating&nbsp; family time presented me with the biggest challenge. The main issues weren\'t related to productivity, team working, or being able to make last minute conference calls with customers, it was knowing when to switch off and when to make myself completely unavailable. Whilst having collaboration tools at my fingertips made it easier to communicate, it also encouraged me to check my smartphone frequently, for example following up on emails as soon as I received them, rather than addressing at the end of the day as originally planned.  The on-the-go office  In order to make my life easier (and for testing purposes) I had been using an array of social media and productivity tools; both on-premises and cloud based products, primarily from Cisco and Microsoft. Applications such as Webex, Spark and Skype for Business as well as social apps such as LinkedIn and Twitter had proven invaluable; they allowed me to collaborate reliably on multiple devices; including my Apple Mac, iPad and iPhone.&nbsp;  Unanticipated benefits of smarter working  A factor I didn&rsquo;t anticipate evaluating in any great detail is that of family life. During the trip, without being prompted, my other half, Helena, asked &ldquo;will you be as relaxed and as easy to live with when at home and not in the south of France?&rdquo; She had noticed a change in my behaviour (for the better). This has even caused me to question living in the UK full time; however, I guess that&rsquo;s only a question I&rsquo;d be able to answer if I were to remove the holidaying element entirely and perform a similar experiment over a longer period of time (perhaps three months or so).  It&rsquo;s fair to say that I enjoyed many aspects of this experience, but above all, I really appreciated the freedom and flexibility. Not only in terms of the hours and days I was able to work, but also the locations. I had been able to work from the poolside, the mountains, the coast; in fact, just about any place of my choosing.  Upon reflection, the main challenge I had to overcome was not related to productivity, or team morale, or even communications for that matter; it was knowing when to switch off and make myself &lsquo;completely&rsquo; unavailable and out of contact. Background  Prior to life in the commercial world, I spent my time working for the armed forces in some of the most hostile places on earth. Whilst serving, I worked extensively with computer networks, as well as designing blast walls to absorb rocket energy. I also worked as a specialised military diver and spent half my life underwater searching for dead bodies and other unpleasant things. To let off steam I spent much of my time on the judo mat and in the boxing ring, and in fact, participating in any physical and mental challenge that presented itself. We&rsquo;ve been running our CWA scheme here at Forfusion for almost a year and in that time, we&rsquo;ve had two participants. One of which &ndash; Simon Marshall - was offered a full time role as he displayed all of the qualities we look for and now works for our Government Secure Services team.  The second participant &ndash; Molly Stone - is coming to the end of her placement this week. Molly&rsquo;s personality, technical skills and work ethic have impressed all of the team at Newcastle HQ. This is what she had to say about her time at Forfusion:  Civvy street  For me, my CWA at Forfusion was by far the most beneficial part of my resettlement.  From the age of 16, I moved from my family home and joined the army. Seven years later after many operational deployments in highly structured and disciplined work routines, and a lot of training, I decided that the time had come for me to move on into the world outside the Armed Forces, known as &lsquo;Civvy Street&rsquo;.  The day that I completed my notice of termination, I was filled with a lot of apprehension and questions:  Will I get a job? Are my skills transferrable? Where will I live? How will I cope with all this change?  This was a perfectly normal response to such a life changing decision. Fortunately, a friend pointed me in the direction of Forfusion and I applied to join their CWA.  I spent a total of two weeks with the company and I wanted to share my experiences to try and encourage other people in my situation to take up this opportunity, as I found it invaluable.  Forfusion is a professional services and IT consultancy that create customised technology solutions to suit business needs. As I wanted to start my new career as a Network Engineer, Forfusion seemed like a good place to go for me. But what was beneficial is that I learnt about &nbsp;several of the departments from project management to sales.  In good company  Over a third of the team at Forfusion are ex-military themselves and are therefore accustomed to the transformations which those leaving the Armed Forces will experience. I obtained lots of advice regarding differences I would notice and how some of the team personally dealt with the process, not just relating to work but also civilian life generally.  From day one, I felt very comfortable being shown around by one of the ex-military employees and on arrival, I was introduced to the team and taken through the induction process. This really helped to embed in my mind how a civilian company runs. I spent time with someone from each section so that I could see how all departments link together and understand the bigger picture.  Within the first few days, one of the consultants (Marc) took me through a small test to see what stage I was at technically. From the results, he made a plan of areas that I may need to improve in and technologies that I could learn in more depth to help me progress. He was genuinely interested in what I wanted to achieve from my placement and also where I wanted to go with my career.&nbsp; I found the time spent with Marc invaluable, he explained different directions I could take in my career and this helped me in my decisions. Marc spent a lot of time teaching me new things and also showing me great ways to see these in practice.  As a company, I think that Forfusion has a fantastic ethos and genuinely care about the experience the customer receives. They are not a company who are financially driven, this shows when you talk to any employee. Forfusion&rsquo;s main goal is to help the customer understand everything which is being put in place and why. The company is full of friendly, motivated people who are brilliant at their jobs and if that is not a good enough reason to want to work or carry out a CWA here, then I don&rsquo;t know what is!  If you are going through the resettlement process and are worried about your transition into civilian life, I highly recommend going to Forfusion for a CWA. Every single person cares about what you want to achieve from the attachment and are interested in your feedback and making improvements to the programme. Your mind will be put at ease and it will help you start transitioning before you enter your new life. So have a lot of people.  Forfusion however puts this into practice perhaps more than most. And that&rsquo;s why for my family holiday, where I&rsquo;ll be spending a month in the south of France, I&rsquo;m going to put this way of working to the test.  Essentially, my family, friends and dogs (Daisy and Marvin) will have to understand I&rsquo;m experimenting with smarter working. I believe, if implemented correctly, a smarter working ethos is not just better for business, it&rsquo;s better for society as a whole.  As we explored at our event: &lsquo;What does Flexible Working mean for the North East?&rsquo;,&nbsp; smarter, flexible working empowers individuals to choose when and where they conduct work related activities.  An integrated approach  This approach can foster trust, promote creative thinking and more importantly help employees integrate (not balance) their work and personal lives more effectively &ndash; improving their wellbeing. This flexibility usually makes them happier, healthier and more productive, something we&rsquo;ve witnessed first-hand.  Obviously, Forfusion promotes and sells some of the technology that makes this ethos possible; however, it&rsquo;s only half the equation. Implementing and refining a framework that suits flexible workers and encourages cultural change within the team is just as important.  I want to be able to work the hours of my choosing and from a location that works for me. For example, I&rsquo;m very much a morning person, therefore tend to grapple with more complex work related issues at 5am when there are no distractions, but I respect that others in the team work in different ways and at different times.  There will be the obvious managerial challenges and of course issues with scheduling; however, every effort will be made to attend video conference calls that have already been planned; our Sales and Marketing weekly catch calls being a perfect example of this.  Stepping back to move forward  One of the things I&rsquo;m looking forward to most, (other than sampling some of the fine wines and cheeses!) is spending more time on business strategy and completing tasks that are made difficult when facing day to day distractions in the office.  Here&rsquo;s the rough routine I&rsquo;ve planned:    06:00 (05:00 UK) - Quick swim, breakfast and coffee  06:45 (05:45 UK) - Four hours work, available via audio, video and instant messaging (planned strategic works)  10:45 (09:45 UK) - Out with dogs for a walk or run (perhaps call into a caf&eacute;)  13:00 (12:00 UK) - Holiday time (unavailable)  18:00 (17:00 UK) - One hour work, available via audio, video and instant messaging (catch up activities and planning)  19:00 (18:00 UK) - Holiday time (unavailable)    The plan is to work four to five hours on a typical &lsquo;split&rsquo; day; however, there will be days that I make myself completely available, or unavailable, which will likely be influenced by visits from family and friends, weather conditions and work emergencies.  Work/life integration will be one issue but so will physical absence from the office. Team management and engagement may present a challenge, especially if important decisions need to be made during times that I&rsquo;m not available; something that will need to be managed very carefully.  I plan to make myself available at specific times and also to delineate periods for family and friends (and dogs); how my family will react to this is another matter!  Nonetheless, I believe I will relish the challenge, as I&rsquo;m incredibly interested in developing smarter working methods, identifying cultural boundaries and exploiting collaboration tools we have at our disposal.  I start my journey on May 20th and I&rsquo;m very excited for an overdue (working) holiday! Chief Executive Officer                          Email &nbsp;&nbsp; Call +44 (0) 191 500 9100                                                                                                                                                                                         Profile Bio               Areas of responsibility within Forfusion  As Chief Executive Officer I&rsquo;m responsible for setting the strategy, culture and governance across the entire company &ndash; I lead Forfusion\'s team on a mission to transform business, together.&nbsp;  Industry experience  Having worked in technology, engineering and business consulting for over 20 years, I&rsquo;ve gained invaluable experience in both private and public sector industries. I&rsquo;ve architected complex designs, technology road-maps and risk mitigation strategies, for some of the largest blue-chip companies in the world. More recently, I&rsquo;ve been responsible for managing and executing a company acquisition, as well as developing the associated earn out mechanics.  Background  Prior to life in the commercial world, I spent my time working for the armed forces in some of the most hostile places on earth. Whilst serving, I worked extensively with computer networks, as well as designing blast walls to absorb rocket energy. I also worked as a specialised military diver and spent half my life underwater searching for dead bodies and other unpleasant things. To let off steam I spent much of my time on the judo mat and in the boxing ring, and in fact, participating in any physical and mental challenge that presented itself.  Favourite quote  This quote really resonates with me, as I feel it represents one of our most powerful core values, integrity.    &ldquo;A lot of people are afraid to tell the truth, to say no. That\'s where toughness comes into play. Toughness is not being a bully. It\'s having backbone.&rdquo;  Robert Kiyosaki  Other interests  Now that my judo and boxing days are over, I still like to keep fit by running and attending the gym. Aside from this, I love fine wine and France, as well as spending time with my crazy boxer dogs and my very patient girlfriend. I also enjoy reading books on business strategy and pursuing further studies to broaden my knowledge in this weird and wonderful world.
